چکیده

In this paper, we present new multi-year and 72-day mean seasonal-latitudinal tidal structures in exospheric temperature derived from joint analysis of CHAMP and GRACE accelerometer measurements. These results include diurnal tides DE3, DE2, D0, and DW2 and semidiurnal tides S0, SE1, SE2, SE3, SW4, and SW6. We also employ Hough mode extensions (HMEs) and the Climatological Model of Thermosphere Tides (CTMT) to ascertain whether the observed structures are consistent with those observed at 110 km and presented in part 1 of this study. The aggregate sum of all the tidal components is shown to impose considerable longitude and month-to-month variability on the exosphere temperature tidal spectrum. Direct observations of nonmigrating diurnal tides in the equatorial thermosphere

[1] We present direct observations of nonmigrating diurnal tides in the 90–270 km range inferred from the Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite (UARS) wind imaging interferometer (WINDII). A prominent zonal wavenumber 4 appears in daytime zonal winds, extending to 180 km. We interpret this signature as an eastward‐propagating diurnal wavenumber 3 (DE3) viewed from the satellite perspective. This ...

Vertical dust mixing and the interannual variations in the Mars thermosphere

[1] Mars winter polar warming is a phenomenon of the lower thermosphere temperatures and densities that is well documented by in situ accelerometer data taken during spacecraft aerobraking maneuvers. Previous work by Bougher et al. (2006) simulates two specific time periods, corresponding to existing aerobraking data sets, and confirms the existence of winter polar warming structures in the Mar...

A study into the effect of the diurnal tide on the structure of the background mesosphere and thermosphere using the new coupled middle atmosphere and thermosphere (CMAT) general circulation model

A new coupled middle atmosphere and thermosphere general circulation model has been developed, and some first results are presented. An investigation into the effects of the diurnal tide upon the mean composition, dynamics and energetics was carried out for equinox conditions. Previous studies have shown that tides deplete mean atomic oxygen in the upper mesosphere-lower thermosphere due to an ...

Dynamics of Titan's thermosphere

We estimate the wind speeds in Titan's thermosphere by considering the various terms of the wind equation, without actually solving it, with a view to anticipating what might be observed by the Cassini spacecraft in 2004. The winds, which are driven by horizontal pressure gradients produced by solar heating, are controlled in the Earth's thermosphere by ion-drag and coriolis force, but in Titan...

Doppler imager/UARS

This paper presents comparisons between wind measurements in the mesosphere and lower thermosphere by medium-frequency (MF) radars and by the high-resolution Doppler imager onboard the Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite (UARS). Because of distinctive observational patterns, time and space averaging, and data processing algorithms, satellites and radars observe the atmosphere from their own per...
